Description

Product Description

“The classic tale of the old couple, with no children of their own, who bake a gingerbread boy to keep them company. Just as the little old woman is about to take him from the oven, he slips away and runs out the door past a cow, a horse, a group of threshers, mowers, etc. All follow in hot pursuit until the gingerbread boy meets up with a wily fox, and ‘at last and at last he went the way of every single gingerbread boy that ever came out of an oven . . . He was all gone!’ A wonderfully frenetic cross-country chase is depicted in Galdone’s broadly humorous color wash drawings. Of the eight editions of this well-known story now in print, this hilarious version is the most delectable.” —School Library Journal, starred

“Galdone has already proven many times over that he is perfectly at home with those traditional nursery tales that are still preschoolers’ favorites, and his expressive, unassuming style just right for their very young audience. . . . Children will follow along breathlessly . . . right up to that last snip snap snip when the Gingerbread Boy goes ‘the way of every single gingerbread boy that ever came out of an oven.’”—Kirkus Reviews

This is an annoying version of The Gingerbread Man, but I had to have this particular one for a sequencing activity for my pre-K class tomorrow. I finally got it to download, only to discover the Kindle formatting is horrific. I just hope I can read it coherently enough for my students to complete the activity successfully.

Very cute book! My husband read it to my sons preschool class and we also were responsible for snack so we brought in Gingerbread men. It was a big hit. Book has lots of teachable moments and provided lots of fun for all!

Not my favorite

I don''t really like the telling of this version of the story. I don''t much like the illustrations either. I thought my grandchildren would like to hear this story, but they found this book uninteresting.

Great story but prefer hard cover
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2019
Too garrulous. I''ve been looking for a version of this book from the 80s that was so easy to read and "rhythmic". Soft cover is too soft.

Great Version of the original Story

So hard to find a story where the fox is smugly satisfied! If you are looking for the original - this is it! Then you can read all the riffs on the original story that you like!

Terrible Kindle Version that''s a formatting disaster
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2017
The kindle version of this book is a hot mess. The pages are all scrambled. The text cuts off midpage and continues on the next and some pages are cut off and duplicated and weirdly zoomed in. Not usable and Kindle should get rid of this version and fix it!

I have 2 versions of the Gingerbread Boy and this is one of them. When I was a child I remember my mother baking little gingerbread men and I loved the story as a child. So when I found this one by Paul Galdone, I had to get it because I really, really love his illustrations. His style is whimsical and fun and the hardcover edition is beautiful to look at. My child loves this book and it is a favorite at bedtime.

I am always on the look out for good children''s books because my daughter loves being read to and we can go through a stack quite quickly. My daughter (aged 4) and I both love this book. The story is told in the traditional way - i.e. it seems perfectly normal when the gingerbread boy gets eaten rather than sad and upsetting (which could have been a problem for my daughter if it were told differently). Story is a nice length, pictures are great, definitely recommended.

Perfect read-aloud classic

A classic that has all the elements of a perfect read-aloud story: big, expressive drawings, rhythmic sentence structure that''s easy to follow, a delightful build-up, and the promised ending. I read it to my esl childrens classes, and it''s a hit every time.
